Going green is something that you have to put consistent effort into. Once you’ve decided to be more earth conscious, it’s a cause you’ll likely be dedicated to for life. We only have one planet, and although you’re only one person, any effort you put in to improve the Earth DOES make a difference. Not only will you be doing the right thing and saving energy, you’ll be an example to anyone else who is considering or trying to figure out how to go green. And another huge plus to going green? Chances are, you’ll actually save money. If you could save both the planet and money at the same time, wouldn’t you do it?

We’ve talked about how to implement a green initiative in the office workplace, and also on your construction work site. But the other place you spend the majority of your time at is your home! There are lots of ways you can make your home more sustainable.

Insulation

Make sure your home is adequately insulated. You’ll want to make sure that the walls, ceilings, and floors are all insulated well. Insulating your home will keep heat in during the winter and retain cool air during the summer. So you won’t have to run the heater or AC as long because you won’t be releasing that air, and energy, back outside. It will actually stay inside and be much more effective.

Window treatments

A great way to save energy is by installing double glazed windows, thermal blocking/black out curtains, or tinting your windows. All of these options will block harsh sunlight. Not only will this keep your home from overheating because not as much sunlight is entering, it will also keep your furniture from fading from the sunlight.

Use the sun to your advantage

Although the sun can warm your house up hotter than you may want during the summer without proper preventative window treatments, it’s possible to use the sun to help you save even more energy! Installing solar panels is one of the easiest and best ways to utilize the sun. Deciding to invest in solar panels can seem a little financially intimidating, but the amount of money that you’ll save over even just a short period of time will more than pay for the solar panels. Solar panels can eliminate your electric and gas bills.
